Re: “Stand with alumni” (Your Views, Nov. 23):
Virginia Wesleyan Board of Trustees, President Scott Miller and Jane Batten have all lost touch dismissing constituents' requests to meet and discuss concerns. To refuse conversation, reconsideration and a fair compromise is not a faith-based continuation of Wesleyan traditions. Actions speak louder than words.
The current administration removed the cross from the official Beacon logo, which was a mistake. The cross represents more than a religion; it represents love, acceptance, respect and forgiveness. Everyone who has attended VWU knew the United Methodist connections and attended regardless of their beliefs and lifestyles. Our differences and love for each other is what makes Wesleyan’s legacy.
They have missed the mark to grow admissions. I believe current world issues are challenging one’s faith and people are searching with revivals and baptisms for resolution. To fill that need I think VWU needs to allocate funds to expand the chapel, grow religious studies and rotate worship services with all denominations.
Moving forward — keep the VWU name, add the cross back to the official Beacon logo, hire a new president, add alumni back to the board of trustees and place a sculpture of the Batten family at the campus’ entrance. Apologize to alumni, professors and current students acknowledging lost communication and active listening. If concerns are not met, current students should file a lawsuit to protect the university’s name due to a breached admissions contract.
